My time with NYSCHECK as a volunteer for the Social Determinants of Health screening program at Mount Sinai has been extremely valuable and rewarding. With an interest in medicine and environmental health, I wanted an experience that would evaluate the intersectionality of these two realms and this program has provided just that. During this time, I’ve screened patients for social and environmental factors and referred them to community resources as needed. Under the guidance of the wonderful Mount Sinai staff, I’ve learned that when clinicians view patients holistically and provide well thought out care, patients benefit. My perspective on healthcare has certainly been broadened from this experience, so I’m forever grateful for this opportunity.
