The NYSCHECK Long Island center is co-located at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center (part of Northwell Health) and SUNY Stony Brook University, covering the counties of Nassau and Suffolk.
The center’s lead partner is the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition, Inc. (HBCAC). HBCAC has been the main partner for the Long Island Center since the center’s inception in 2004, and has been in existence since 1993. The goal of this center is to diminish the underlying causes of diseases that disproportionately affect communities confronting poverty and other barriers to success, which is why HBCAC’s mission is to focus on environmental health education for children and families through their Prevention Is The Cure™ campaign. Significant outcomes were achieved in making legislative change when the “Toxin Free Toddlers and Babies Act” made Suffolk County the first in the nation to ban the sales of baby bottles and sippy cups containing Bisphenol A (BPA) and in passing the “Safer Sales Slip Act,” which banned BPA from thermal receipt papers. There is also a 6-week summer program that takes place in Harlem, called Cyclopedia, which is aimed at developing positive youth development by riding bikes in order to reduce chronic stress levels, improve self-esteem, and improve physical fitness while providing positive role models and opportunities to learn and expand in a safe, structured environment.
Additionally, monthly newsletters, teen talks, blogs, a YouTube channel, and a resource guide for clinical tools, parent factsheets, general resources, clinical consultation, and local public health information are all available as resources for parents and the community in order to prevent harm from environmental causes and exposures.
